“Yo,” the e-mail I received recently started out, “Whaddya think?”
Was this from a teenager, or maybe an eccentric friend? No, it was from the other agent presenting me his buyer’s offer. Attached was the offer, no further explanations. I sighed, “Where are the manners in the world?” Luckily, then I remembered Cecilia Grimes, Etiquette and Protocol Coach, expert in business and professional conduct.
The last time I met Ms. Grimes she handed me a small book on Etiquette, and with horror I now recall that I never sent her a hand written thank you note. What is the time frame to do so? I don’t know. This was one of those situations we run across in business all the time where we have the perfect opportunity to follow up – one could even say, the polite opportunity to follow up, and we miss it. In what other ways have we been rude in small (or large) ways to our clients, past agents in transactions, people we meet at an open house, networking contacts, etc.? In what way have we come across as less than professional with stammering introductions, adolescent-sounding emails, inappropriate attire or ???.
Modern etiquette codifies social interactions with others, and in the business world, it is by no means out of date. Some areas to consider what is proper:
• Greeting relatives, friends and acquaintances with warmth and respect
• Refraining from insults and prying curiosity
• Offering hospitality to guests
• Wearing clothing suited to the occasion
• Contributing to conversations without dominating them
• Offering assistance to those in need
• Eating neatly and quietly
• Avoiding disturbing others with unnecessary noise
• Following established rules of an organization upon becoming a member
• Arriving promptly when expected
• Comforting the bereaved
• Responding to invitations promptly
• Accepting gifts or favors with humility and to acknowledge them promptly with thanks or refusing the gift politely (e.g. a thank-you card) *
Ms. Grimes’ Seminar, Business Etiquette for Today provides on overview of critical topics in business etiquette that often receive little consideration by those in the business world-including working a room effectively, making introductions, remembering names, handshaking, using proper protocol for office technology and using proper protocol in business meetings. At the September meeting of the Women’s Council of Realtors, Ms. Grimes will address issues ranging from e-mail etiquette to the proper way to introduce your colleagues to each other. There are always lots of laughs (at our selves) as we realize we might have forgotten a few of the things that mom taught us, or maybe mom never knew).
Celilia Grimes is a well-known author and lecturer, speaking throughout the country to business groups, student leaders and community groups.
